For 2012 the qualification for the Champions League has stayed the same. It starts with a round-robin group stage of 32 teams, preceded by two qualification streams for teams that did not receive direct entry to the tournament. These streams are divided into teams who qualified by being league champions and those who ranked 2nd to 4th in their leagues.
The number of teams a specific league can enter is based on their previous 5 Champions League seasons. The better they perform the less qualification rounds they have to compete in and the more teams are allowed through to the Champions League.
32 teams are divided into 8 groups and seeding is used while making the draw for this stage. Teams from the same country may not be drawn into groups together so that each team meets the others in their group home and away in a round-robin format. Only the winners and runner-up to these groups then progress to the next round, whil the third-placed team are automatically entered into the UEFA Europa League.
The next stage involves the team winning team from each group playing against the runners-up from another group, groups from the same country may not be drawn against each other, the same as the first round. From the quarter-finals onwards, the draw is completely random. If the sum of two games are tied, the team who scored more goals at their opponent's stadium advances.
These group stages are played through autumn, whilst the knock-out stage starts right after winter break. With the knock-out ties played in a two-legged format, with exception to the final, it is typically held in the final two weeks of May.

At first, the UEFA Champions League were known as the European Champion Clubs' Cup (or European Cup), starting the event back in 1955. The competition was initially a straight knockout competition open only to the champion club of each country. During the 1990's the format changed to round-robin group phase with more teams. In 2010/2011 it was updated once again to allow for more clubs to compete, keeping the competition fresh and exciting for players and viewers alike.
The Champions League name-change happened in conjunction with the Europa League (formerly known as the UEFA Cup) the same time the structure were amended in 1992 and shouldn't be mistaken for one another.
The reigning champions, Barcelona, is set to defend their title in an epic battle, looking to knock-out Real Madrid, the most successful club in the competition's history, early on. Spanish clubs have the highest number of victories, thus far, 13, and if Barcelona had their way, it will be 14 this year.
